About Us

Our History

Originally formed in the mid-1960s, the Friends of the Library for Hood County began as an advocacy group to promote passage of a local referendum establishing the first public library in the Hood County area in 1968.

Since that date, the organization has continued to advocate and cultivate public and private support for our library and to promote volunteerism in our community.  In the last four years, the organization has provided more than $75k in funding to support children’s programming; building maintenance, remodeling and improvement; and special title acquisitions in support of our library and the services it provides.

Our Activities

The Friends of the Library engage in a number of activities in support of the Hood County Library. These activities include sponsorship of displays, speakers, book reviews, childrens’ programs, film programs, book drives, book fairs, etc.  We also make available tuition scholarships for local residents pursuing professional education in librarianship.

One of our primary goals is to develop a better public understanding of  libraries and the vital role that your Library plays in today’s living. Toward this end, we encourage an appreciation of reading for personal enjoyment and for research and information purposes among people young and old.

Our Programs

COMMUNITY EARLY LITERACY – Early literacy and early reading in the Granbury community are encouraged with English and Spanish language board-book gift packets supplied by FOL.  These are provided to the family of babies born at Lake Granbury Medical Center.  This gift includes a book, a “baby’s first library card,” brochures for parents on how to share books and share reading and the importance of early stimulation.   Read more about this program in our blog post.
